We have once again reached that time of the year when the flowers are in bud, the days are starting to (hopefully) get warmer and lighter and everyone feels just that little bit happier in the knowledge that summer is coming. If you are an employer, your thoughts should also be turning to your payroll and your end of year task list.
The 5th April is the official end of the payroll year and employers know that they should be doing things to make it run smoothly and prepare for the next year, but what are those tasks and what do you need to do?
Checklist for employers:
- Payroll end date: As an employer, you will need to double check what date your payroll ends. If the dates are not kind to you, you could end up in a situation whereby by you have to account for an extra week – the dreaded Week 53! This year, if your payroll falls on a Tuesday (which is unlikely for many companies, it has to be said) you will have that unlucky week 53.
- Starters and leavers: Check that you have processed all starters and leavers within the year. If you have neglected to record a leaving date then the employee will be transferred into your new payroll year.
- Final FPS: Once you have completed all of the payroll periods, you will need to submit a final Full Payment Submission (FPS) for the year. The submission deadline is the 19th April. Don’t be late!
- P60s: The deadline for distributing your employee P60s is 31st May 2022 – an important one to note.
- Next year: You may have only just finished this year, but you will need to set up the file for next year’s payroll.
- Check your info: As you’re probably aware, each April the national minimum and living wages are subject to an increase. Always ensure that you check employee tax codes, rates of pay and make sure that you don’t fall foul of those increases.
